Why do people get tattoos in Hebrew when they aren’t Hebrew people?

I mean, what’s up with that? Whenever I see someone sporting Hebraic text, I get all excited - at first. (Hey, it’s a cousin! Neato!) And if the text isn’t messed up, or the phrase is grammatically correct, that signals to me the wearer is very likely Jewish, since there needs to be a basic familiarity to not fuck up a foreign tongue. Except lately, I see all this Hebrew, and not a single Hebrew tribe fellow among the bunch. What gives?
And when I saw a tattoo running down this lady’s back, perfect Hebrew script, with nikudot (vowel notations), direct quote from Song of Songs? Well, I was confused at first, because she didn’t look Jewish. (What can I say, we are adept at spotting our own.) Well… turns out, she wasn’t. Apparently, in her country (she’s Latina, and I’m sorry but her exact origin escapes me at the moment), Hebrew and/or Song of Songs is popular…? And this phrase means a lot to her, and so on and so on, smiles all around.
Ok, ok, cool. And hey, nice Thai (?) tat on your wrist too. So…is it cool because it’s foreign? Is that what’s going on here? What is going on here?
I’m getting really weirded out. I see these tats all over. What’s with the Hebrew obsession, guys? Is your own language not good enough? I get that you mean no disrespect or whatever, but come on.
Isn’t this cultural appropriation? Or am I being a silly goose?

Frankly I don’t see anything wrong with it at all. In fact, I love it! That someone likes something from my culture enough to want to etch it into their skin, wow! It’s not appropriation, it’s appreciation!

Look, I understand that your language (and culture) is/are very important to you, but it’s a language. You don’t own it.
I am a half white/half black American with red hair, green eyes, and pale skin. But you know what? I speak Spanish. Because I grew up in a Hispanic household and spent a lot of time immersed in that culture. I listen to Spanish music and watch Spanish movies and speak in Spanish with my mother (who is 100% white, thank you very much) on a regular day to day basis.
Am I “appropriating” their culture because I’m not actually Hispanic?
No. I embrace that culture. I love that culture. I love the language and the food and the colors. I’m more at home in it than I am in “white” culture.
And if I want to get a tattoo on my arm that says “Quiero ser libre, vivir mi vida con quien yo quiera” or “Te amo como se aman ciertas cosas oscuras,
secretamente, entre la sombra y el alma.” I will.
No one is hurting you by getting a tattoo in Hebrew, just as I hurt no one by getting a tattoo in Spanish, or a stranger in Japan getting a tattoo in English.
